Carrying out Private Hire Journeys

This section covers the basic requirements for a London PHV driver when carrying out bookings: where bookings must come from, what your operator must record, the rules at late-night venues and airports, fares, lost property, suspicious items, and when a booking can be refused.

What you will learn

1Explain that you may only carry out bookings received from a licensed London PHV operator, in a licensed PHV with its licence discs on display.
2Use TfL's online licence checker tool to confirm that an operator, driver or vehicle is licensed.
3Describe why a PHV is not a taxi and what you must not do when a member of the public approaches you without a booking.
4List the seven pieces of information your operator must record before a journey starts.
5Apply the rules for operating centres in late-night venues and for Heathrow and London City airports.
6State who is responsible for fares, what to do about lost property, and how to report a suspicious item or suspicious behaviour.
7Decide when a booking may be refused, what you must do afterwards, and which reasons for refusal are never acceptable.
