Safer Driving
This section covers the standards of driving TfL expects from you: safe speeds and manoeuvres, concentration and the hand-held phone ban, drink and drugs, seatbelt and child restraint rules, awareness of vulnerable road users, clear windscreen vision, tiredness and weather, cycle safety and the daily vehicle safety checks.
What you will learn
- 1Explain what safe speeds and safe manoeuvres mean for a professional PHV driver.
- 2State the rules on concentration and the hand-held mobile phone ban, including when you are stopped in a queue of traffic.
- 3Describe the law on alcohol, drugs and prescription medicine, and how the police test at the roadside.
- 4Apply the seatbelt and child restraint rules, including who is responsible for children under 14 and what to do when the correct child car seat is not available.
- 5Identify vulnerable road users and the extra care they need.
- 6Explain the windscreen vision rules and the offence of putting a cradled device in the swept area.
- 7List the cycle safety top tips, including the advanced stop line rule.
- 8Carry out the vehicle safety checks on the driver's compartment, passenger compartment, wheels and tyres, and the outside of the vehicle.
